Danny Murphy says he likes ‘everything’ about Manchester United player after Liverpool draw

Danny Murphy has admitted that he really likes everything about Kobbie Mainoo as he issued his verdict on his performance for Manchester United against Liverpool on Sunday.

Kobbie Mainoo continues to impress. It is remarkable to think that the 18-year-old only made his full Premier League debut for United less than a month ago.

Gary Neville suggested that he had been told over the summer that Manchester United were not initially planning to sign another midfielder because of Mainoo.

And you can certainly understand why.

Mainoo has arguably been one of United’s best players whenever he has played this season. And that run continued on Sunday as Erik ten Hag’s side held Liverpool to a goalless draw at Anfield.

Daniel Sturridge picked Mainoo out as one of the three Manchester United players who impressed him. And Danny Murphy has added to the plaudits heading the teenager’s way, as he was asked on what he particularly likes about the academy graduate.

“Everything. He’s athletic, he’s calm on the ball. He likes getting his foot in. He’s emotional. I don’t know if you saw him coming off in the game where he was geeing the fans up. He’s got everything you want in a midfielder; that mix of tenacity and I’ll have a go, and that calmness on the ball. He’s going to be a really good player for United in the future,” he said.

“I think he’s only started three games: away at Everton, away at Newcastle, and away at Liverpool. For a young kid, the manager must be trusting him and the other players trust in him to play him in those games. I think he did really well.”

Teenager taking full advantage of his opportunity

The one upside to the problems Manchester United are dealing with right now is that it can present opportunities to younger players to come in.

Fans will often cling to any crumb of comfort they can get whenever their team is performing badly. And young players stepping up often provides that.

Mainoo’s emergence into the first-team fold will obviously not lift all of the gloom surrounding Old Trafford right now. But his opportunity may not have come so soon had ten Hag’s men been thriving this season.

And it really does now appear that Manchester United have a potential star of the future in the ranks. Certainly, he could have hardly made a more positive start to his season.
