Danny Murphy says he can see Harry Maguire at Newcastle
Danny Murphy that he could see Harry Maguire at Newcastle United if he leaves Manchester United, believing that Eddie Howe would appreciate his leadership qualities.
Maguire returns to Old Trafford after a superb showing at the World Cup. In fact, he made more starts for England in Qatar than he had for Erik ten Hag’s side in the Premier League during the first-half of the campaign.
He largely lost his place to the pairing of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez after Manchester United’s dreadful start to the season.

But there is little doubt that his stock has increased while he has been playing for his country. And with that, Murphy believes that the 29-year-old may have doubts about his future should he return to the bench.
Obviously, there are not too many clubs who could afford Maguire. Manchester United spent to sign him from Leicester City. And they are likely to want as much of that figure as possible.
But Murphy has suggested that he can see a way out for Maguire should he want to leave.
“I don’t think the United captain will want to hang around Old Trafford beyond the summer as a bit-part player and there won’t be any shortage of interest if he’s allowed to leave,” .
“I can see him at Newcastle United, for example, where Eddie Howe will appreciate his strength and leadership.”
‘A fantastic leader’
It would be a gamble for Newcastle to make a move for Maguire. Having said that, you can understand why Murphy believes that he would have the potential to be a good signing.
He was outstanding at Leicester. And actually, his performances for England – particularly in major tournaments – have largely been very, very good.
Kieran Trippier described him as a ‘fantastic’ leader the Three Lions’ squad love (). He also suggested that Maguire reaching 50 caps was an ‘amazing’ achievement.
If players such as Trippier were on board, and Newcastle felt that the finances made sense, then a move to St James’ Park becomes a much more sensible suggestion than it would have seemed just over a month ago.
