Danny Murphy says £17m Tottenham player is ‘really struggling’ at the minute
Tottenham Hotspur have endured a lukewarm start to the 2024-25 Premier League campaign as Ange Postecoglou continues to look for solutions to improve the situation.
They bounced back from their 1-0 loss against Arsenal with a 3-1 win against Brentford but find themselves tenth in the table, having picked up just seven points out of a possible 15.
There have been suggestions that Tottenham’s position in the league table isn’t a fair reflection of how well they’ve performed this season.
Danny Murphy agrees with that sentiment, although he pointed out Guglielmo Vicario’s poor form as one of the reasons behind their underwhelming start to the season.
Danny Murphy unhappy with Guglielmo Vicario’s performances for Tottenham

The former Tottenham midfielder feels Postecoglou’s side haven’t gotten into their groove in the final third, which has affected them in the opening weeks of the season.
Murphy also pinpointed Vicario’s form and his lack of confidence as another factor that has held them back so far.
“Tottenham’s position of 10th is a little bit false in some respects because the only thing they have been lacking really is well, two things!” said Murphy on talkSPORT.
“One is quality in the final third because every game they play, they get in good positions and the goalkeeper who has got at least 10% of confidence to get himself off the line and maybe pass to his own players a bit more often because he is really struggling.”
Vicario was hailed as ‘outstanding’ by Postecoglou last season and enjoyed a good 2023-24 campaign at Tottenham after signing from Empoli for a fee believed to be in the region of last summer.
What next for Vicario?
Vicario is tempted by the prospect of moving to Inter Milan, with the Serie A giants keeping tabs on him as they look to identify Yann Sommer’s successor between the sticks.
However, Tottenham are unlikely to lose faith him in after just one bad spell, although his ability to gather crosses and deal with set pieces has to improve significantly.
Shay Given feels Vicario is too ‘hot-headed’ to instill any kind of confidence in the Tottenham backline, which is another issue the Italian goalkeeper must deal with.
Regardless of what the future holds, Vicario needs to step it up in the coming weeks and Tottenham aim to climb the Premier League table.
