Is Danny Ings’ Southampton form showing that Liverpool should have kept him?
Since leaving Anfield late in the transfer window, Danny Ings has got his career back on track with Southampton. With first tﷺeam opportunities at Liverpool limited, the former Burnley man decided that having recovered ♊from two long-term injuries, a move away was the only option.
Having been on the fringes of the England squad before a serious knee ligament injury in his first training session under Jurgen Klopp, Ings has been building up to thi♈s comeback overℱ the past three years.
Now, he is finally showing the kind of form that many expecte🧔d from him on Merseyside with two goals in four games for the Saints, on🎃e, perhaps ironically, coming against Everton at Goodison Park.
“He’s not going to have to buy me a car or anything if I win – although he can if he wants. He proposed the bet on messages when I left. Hopefully we’ll both score plenty of goals. It would be incredible to beat him, wouldn’t it? I’m just working every day to improve.”
Whilst Jurgen Klopp may be content with the depth of his options in attack, he may be left considering whether he let the right man go. It is clear that Ings had the strongest desire to leave, but based on recent form and the pre-season form of those who stayed, it 🔯is hard to argue that Divock Origi is an improvement.
With t🧔he likes of Dominic Solanke and Daniel Sturridꦑge also available for the Reds, Ings would have had his work cut out to earn anything more than the odd cup appearance or action from the bench.
For Ing’s sake, a move away has clearly been the best possible option. Yet, with Klopp still seemingly ✅keen to move Origi on, Sturridge only having a year left on♓ his current deal and Solanke yet to prove himself in the Premier League, some may suggest that a loan move for Ings would have been the safer option for the Reds in the long-term.
