Daniel Farke says 21-year-old Leeds gem has been training well

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke has stressed that Charlie Cresswell is doing very well in training and remains in his thoughts for selection.

The Whites boss was speaking to the ahead of Leeds hosting Coventry at Elland Road in the Championship on Saturday.

Cresswell has struggled for game time at Leeds this season, his last appearance a one-minute cameo off the bench against QPR in October.

The 21-year-old has only clocked up 307 minutes this season, and his last start for the Whites came all the way back in August.

Cresswell, who signed a new deal in the summer to keep him at Elland Road until 2027, has a lot of competition ahead of him.

Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk have been in amazing form, while club captain Liam Cooper is fighting Cresswell for third in the pecking order.

Charlie Cresswell is ‘well prepared’ for Leeds United

Cresswell didn’t even make the Leeds bench against Sunderland in midweek, prompting the YEP to ask Farke whether the youngster is doing enough in training to catch the eye.

“Yes, absolutely,” replied Farke. “It was just more like due to the situation with what happened during the game and if I’m honest, it’s not that often that you change during the game on the centre back position.

“For example in the last games we never changed so Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk have done exceptionally well during during the season that keeps even a club legend like Liam Cooper… out.

“But even he was just on the bench in the last games. And obviously Charlie was also an option when Sam Byram was not available, to bring him into the into the squad.

“But if you think what can happen during the game, and we decided to take one more offensive player with us (against Sunderland).”

Farke added: “I have the feeling he is well prepared and I would have no problem at all to start him or give him minutes. It’s just due to competition in the squad that he was not involved at Sunderland.”

Charlie Cresswell future at Leeds United seems uncertain

Cresswell is a top talent who’d no doubt be starting for any other Championship club, but sadly competition at Leeds is so fierce that he’s not getting a look-in.

At 21 years of age, he needs to be playing regularly, so we’ll have to see whether he decides to push for a move away in the January transfer window.

You’d think another loan would do him good, and then Leeds and Cresswell can reassess at the end of the season when the Whites will have a clearer idea of the league they’ll be in and also personnel.
