Curtis Nelson will reportedly snub Sunderland to move to Cardiff City

Sunderland are reportedly set to miss out on a major defensive target. , Curtis Nelson will choose to join Cardiff City instead.

Cardiff have agreed a deal to sign Nelson on a free transfer. The player becomes a free agent in the summer after a three-year stay with Oxford United.

During that period, Nelson played 121 games for the U’s. Prior to that, he came through the ranks with Plymouth Argyle and played nearly 250 games for the Pilgrims.

Sunderland were hoping to bring Nelson in to add League One experience to their back-line. Jack Ross wants another centre-back this summer and Nelson fits the bill.

But it looks like the Black Cats will miss out on the 26-year-old. Instead, Cardiff are closing in on the signing of Nelson for their Championship campaign.

The Bluebirds were relegated from the Premier League last season. But Neil Warnock clearly thinks Nelson can help mount a promotion bid next season.

TBR’s view

This is a major blow for Sunderland because Nelson is a proven defender at League One level. The dominant centre-back is strong in the air and a good leader too – he captained both Plymouth and Oxford.

Cardiff are getting an exciting talent. It is time Nelson steps up and proves himself in the Championship. And he is now at the right age to kick on and compete at a higher level.
