Crystal Palace’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka suffers injury heartbreak at the worst time

Earlier this week, Liverpool and England right back Trent Alexander-Arnold withdrew from the England squad with an injury, potentially opening up a place for Crystal Palace defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

But injury also struck Wan-Bissaka at the worst time, as the Palace man from the England U-21s squad today — when it seemed as Wan-Bissaka might have finally earned his first senior Three Lions call-up.

At the outset of the international break, many were surprised to see the Palace right back in the England youth team, as Wan-Bissaka has stood out as a mature, dependable defender in the Premier League. Others far less experienced in the top flight, such as Callum Hudson-Odoi, had earned call-ups to Gareth Southgate’s side, leading some to question Wan-Bissaka’s omission.

Wan-Bissaka seemed to have been granted a lifeline when Alexander-Arnold left the team with an injury, but just days later Wan-Bissaka succumbed to an injury of his own.

The unfortunate coincidence must have come as a blow to the Palace youngster, as getting a place in Southgate’s depleted squad looked more likely than ever this week.

Yet with Wan-Bissaka continuing to impress at Selhurst Park, a senior England call-up will surely come sooner rather than later for the right back.
