Crystal Palace ‘keenest’ on £10m Aston Villa target who’s ‘one of the best’ youngsters in England

Crystal Palace and Aston Villa have been linked with Peterborough United’s Ronnie Edwards in recent days.

For instance, reported last week that Unai Emery’s Villans are up against the Eagles and also West Ham in pursuit of the defender.

Meanwhile, reported at the start of the month that Roy Hodgson’s charges are particularly advanced with their interest.

However, the report added that Palace are still some way out from Peterborough’s £10million valuation of Edwards.

Now, talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook has provided an update on the Eagles’ interest in the 20-year-old, suggesting they’re currently frontrunners for the Villa target.

Palace face strong competition for Edwards, who is apparently wanted by half a dozen Premier League clubs this month.

Out of all the clubs, the Eagles are “the keenest” in terms of their interest in the player, Crook said on .

However, the likelihood is that no club will be able to get a deal over the line for Edwards in the January transfer window, he added.

“Ronnie Edwards, they’ve had I think up to three offers over the course of the summer window and going into this one rejected,” said Crook.

“So they’re definitely the keenest on him. But I think there are half a dozen Premier League clubs sniffing around at the moment.

“The vibe is that he’s more likely to stay this window than go.”

Edwards is a classy centre-back adept at playing out from the back, composed on the ball, great at reading the game, and dangerous going forwards.

At just 20 years of age, he has already made over 110 appearances for the League One club.

In addition, he was a key member of the England Under-19 side that won the European Championships in 2022.

Last year, – who deemed Edwards ‘one of the best young defenders in English football’ – published quotes from the player about his pride in representing his country.

“The best thing about playing for England is the culture, wearing the badge, knowing that you’re representing your country as one of the best in that position. It’s been a privilege and nice to be recognised,” he said.

In 2021,  reported that Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson had urged the Red Devils to make a move for him.

That didn’t happen, and now the likes of Palace and Villa are in a position where they can try and get their hands on Edwards.
