Crystal Palace fans react to performance of Christian Benteke in Carabao Cup defeat to Colchester United

Crystal Palace were embarrassingly dumped out of the Carabao Cup last night after a 5-4 defeat on penalties to Colchester United.

The League Two outfit had held the Eagles to a goalless spectacle after 90 minutes forcing the lottery of a shootout.

Andros Townsend was the misfortunate penalty-taker. He saw his effort saved and it proved decisive for the Eagles.

The setback comes on the back of Saturday’s magnificent 2-1 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford and boss Roy Hodgson will be keen to now maintain focus on the Premier League.

One man who is badly out of form is striker Christian Benteke.

The £120,000-a-week performer has struggled for goals in recent times. He netted just once in 16 Premier League games last season and seems to be struggling for confidence at the moment.

His confidence appears shot to bits at the moment and last night an effort of his hit the bar and bounced down onto the line, adding to his current goalscoring woes.

Benteke’s overall performance for Palace wasn’t too bad last night. He simply needs a couple of goals and there is every chance he could go on a run that he was akin to during his time with Aston Villa and Liverpool.
