Crouch explains why one Man City star must be finding it ‘difficult’, Wright-Phillips praise

Peter Crouch and Shaun Wright-Phillips have both delivered verdicts on Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus, after the Brazilian scored a brace during his side’s 4-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday night.

Jesus, 23, has been in and out of form this season – but he was clinical on Tuesday night as City overcame a minor wobble to win 4-1. They took the lead through a Leander Dendoncker own goal, dominating the first 45 with 80% possession.

But in the second half, Wolves came back in – with Conor Coady scoring his first ever Premier League goal. It took until the 80th minute City to finally take the game by the scruff of the neck, and Jesus nabbed too while Riyad Mahrez also netted.

Crouch discussed Brazil international Jesus, who now boasts stats of 79 goals in 180 games for the club. He feels that it must be “difficult” to be compared to that of Sergio Aguero, while Wright-Phillips was full of praise for the striker’s work rate.

“That will do him the world of good,” . “It has been difficult for him, maybe not been as clinical as Aguero – being compared to such a great player must be difficult. But he works so hard, his movement is good and he got his two goals.”

“He’s improved so much. His hold up play, he doesn’t score so many goals but he does the other things. His work rate, he makes the unselfish runs, he opens spaces up for others.”

TBR’s view – Is Jesus the long-term answer?

Probably not. To have scored just 11 goals in 27 appearances for City is, unfortunately for the Brazilian, not good enough to be the first-choice striker for a club that are in the top three sides in European football. Erling Haaland is being linked.

If Haaland, or another striker does come in to replace Sergio Aguero come the end of the season, then Jesus needs to consider a move. He still boasts the quality of a Champions League side, but he is just one step behind where City need to be.
