‘Crazy’: Pundit thinks one Spurs player has done something that’s ‘just unacceptable’
Tottenham Hotspur defender Serge Aurier has been criticised by Optus Sport pundit Andy Townsend for his penalty error in Sunday’s Premier League game.
The Spurs full-back has shown major signs of improvement under Jose Mourinho this season following an uncertain future over the summer.
Aurier was reportedly on AC Milan’s radar but he stayed put in North London and eventually became Tottenham’s first-choice right-back amid competition from Matt Doherty.
However, the 27-year-old had a day to forget against Leicester on Sunday, bringing Wesley Fofana down in the box for a penalty which Jamie Vardy converted in first-half injury time.
Spurs couldn’t come back and were eventually beaten 2-0 after Toby Alderweireld put through his own net just before the hour.
“That is so reckless from Serge Aurier, unfortunately it is typical of him,” Townsend told .
“He can be brilliant and be very competitive, and then he’ll do something like that. Just a crazy decision from Aurier.
“I’m sorry, that is just unacceptable. Right on half-time to do what he did there.
“In a very tight game. Spurs haven’t played well, haven’t dominated any of the ball – not good enough by their standards.”
Aurier was also wasteful in the final third and was eventually taken off, Harry Winks taking the Ivorian’s place.

Aurier finished the 2019-20 campaign as the only senior recognised player at right-back, but inconsistency and errors affected some of his displays.
However, a combination of increased competition for places, Mourinho’s coaching and Aurier’s hard work have all culminated in the 27-year-old turning his career at Spurs around.
Unfortunately, Aurier now has it all to do once again, as the Portuguese won’t have been impressed with his mistake and could well opt for Doherty in the XI in the next game.
