Craig Burley left shocked by ‘utter nonsense’ deadline day transfer rumour coming out of Arsenal

Arsenal are looking to make a couple of additions to their squad before the transfer window slams shut.

Mikel Arteta has been bolstered by the arrivals of Mikel Merino and Riccardo Calafiori, with the pair signed to add quality and versatility to their existing options.

With Aaron Ramsdale on his way to Southampton, Arsenal are in talks to sign Joan Garcia before deadline day.

Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto has also been linked with a move to the Emirates, indicating that a goalkeeper is likely to be added to their squad.

However, in attack, they are yet to add more firepower but could well do so in the coming hours.

Raheem Sterling has been linked with a shock move to Arsenal after being left out of the Chelsea squad by Enzo Maresca.

And Craig Burley is not in favour of the deal in the slightest as the England international looks for a new club.

Burley says Sterling is past his best, indicating that he wouldn’t fit into the culture at Arsenal.

“I’d be shocked if Arsenal were even interested. What Arsenal are building is a camaraderie, a sort of a siege mentality,” Burley said on ESPN UK’s YouTube channel.

“Even the guys that aren’t playing somehow seem happy enough and they are managed very well.

The former Chelsea man believes Arsenal won’t be interested in Sterling before the transfer deadline, adding that he’d be happy to be proven wrong if it happens.

Burley continued: “Do you think Arsenal need a high-earner whose career is in decline, but also when he was left out of the squad, his representatives come out with some long-winded statement?

“I don’t know where this has come from but for me, this is utter nonsense. If he turns up with a red shirt we’ll have to eat humble pie but I don’t think we’re gonna have a problem with that.”

Do Arsenal need Sterling?

The Gunners already have Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli on the left flank so even if Sterling were to join, he’d be Arsenal’s third-choice option in his preferred position.

His wages could also prove to be a stumbling block in any potential transfer, so the England international isn’t really the best choice for Arteta despite their willingness to sign an attacker.

Arsenal would be better off signing an out-and-out striker as Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus scored just 17 Premier League goals between them.

The Gunners could also look for an able deputy to Bukayo Saka, who plays pretty much every game when fully fit as they don’t have another solid option in his position.
