Tottenham Hotspur star Steven Bergwijn scored a stunner for the Netherlands last night, and Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk heaped praise on him after the game.

Bergwijn has had a torrid time at Spurs this year. He played a grand total of 546 minutes in the Premier League all season, which is nowhere near enough for a player of his quality.

The 24-year-old Dutch forward was very close to leaving Tottenham in January, and it looks like it’s almost certain that he’ll be sold by Spurs this summer.

Folks at Tottenham may not be too impressed with what Bergwijn has done over the last two-and-a-half years, but van Dijk was certainly blown away by the attacker’s performance last night.

Bergwijn started alongside Memphis Depay up top for the Dutch against Roberto Martinez’s Belgium, and it was a night to forget for the Red Devils.

The 24-year-old scored a stunner from outside the box just a few minutes before half-time. That set Holland on their way, and they smashed three more in the second half to pick up a truly convincing win.

After the game, van Dijk, branded as ‘‘ by many people including Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, heaped praise on Bergwijn, who was on another level last night.

The Liverpool star told : “A good win with good football. Everyone was good today. Steven Bergwijn, in particular, was excellent, they couldn’t get a grip on him.”

Ajax likely to sign Bergwijn this summer

Bergwijn was very close to a return to the Netherlands in January. Ajax tried really hard to get a deal done, but they couldn’t agree on a fee with Tottenham then.

However, the Dutch champions haven’t given up just yet.

Reports this week revealed that Ajax have lodged a new bid to sign Bergwijn this summer, but that, unfortunately for them, was turned down by Daniel Levy, who is just not ready to lower his demands.

Ajax are expected to return with a better offer soon, and it is very likely that this move will go through in the coming weeks.
