Could youngster Gotts be short-term answer to Leeds’ right-back worries?
Leeds United’s thin squad and lack of defensive options has been an issue since last season and a growing concern under Marcelo Bielsa, due to the Argentine’s intense demands and now the situation is at crisis point.
Luke Ayling and Gaetano Berardi have been ruled out for an extended period of time, which leaves Bielsa without a specialist right-back to call upon.
The workmanlike Stuart Dallas has tried his best to do a job at full-back, but he is a winger and behind that, the options all lack experience.
Jamie Shackleton can operate there but he would also be out of position on the right, so could Bielsa turn to 18-year-old Robbie Gotts?
, Gotts has ‘continued to impress’ out at right-back for the Under 23 team and although he can also play on the right of midfield, has shown his quality on the right of defence.
Having a specialist, even someone who is young and experienced, may help Bielsa in terms of the tactical flexibility he prefers his teams to have.
It is also important to consider the impact that constantly moving someone like Dallas about may have; after all, he is a senior player who will want to play in his preferred position more often than not.
Gotts would give his all and an injection of youth can do wonders for a side, especially one that is starting to slow down slightly.
