There was no question that many of the Ibrox faithful immediately sensed that bringing Allan McGregor back to Rangers would prove a brilliant decision. But few could have imagined what a masterstroke it would actually turn out to be.
McGregor is playing some of the best football of his career. He has kept 13 clean sheets in 21 appearances this season. And he has produced a number of game-changing displays since his return to Ibrox.
So it is no surprise that Steven Gerrard has recently spoken about the 37-year-old extending his contract, .
McGregor appears to have the potential to carry on for a number of years yet. And that may not be ideal news for teammate Wes Foderingham.
Foderingham has played 12 times since the start of last season having been the number one before McGregor’s return.
In fairness to the 28-year-old, from the outside it appears that he has acted with a lot of class. There have rarely been comments about wanting to leave.
Of course, he is allowed to be frustrated. He has gone from being one of the first names on the Rangers team sheet to barely playing. But any discontent has never seemingly found its way into the public domain.
Nevertheless, he would be forgiven for rethinking his future after Gerrard’s latest comments. Foderingham is at an age where he would ideally like to be playing regularly again.
And Gerrard’s comments suggest that McGregor is unlikely to be going anywhere anytime soon. By the time McGregor hangs up his gloves, Foderingham is likely to be in his 30s. And he may be wary of having to work harder to convince a team to make him their number one the longer he stays.
On the other hand, Foderingham may be content with his current situation. Rangers are making so much progress under Gerrard, and it appears to be a matter of time before the trophies follow.
But if McGregor is sticking around beyond this season, perhaps Rangers should be even more prepared for Foderingham to make it clear that he would be interested in considering a move away.
