Could Arsenal’s Kieran Gibbs revive his career under Tony Pulis at West Brom?
West Bromwich Albion are keen to offer Arsenal outcast Kieran Gibbs an escape route.
That is according to the , who claim that Baggies’ manager Tony Pulis has identified the left-back as a key transfer target, with the new season now less than a month away.
The Gunners have placed a £12 million price tag on Gibbs, who slipped behind Nacho Monreal in the pecking order last season, where he made only eight Premier League appearances.
While the two clubs are still some distance apart in terms of agreeing a fee, Arsenal are believed to be willing to offload Gibbs – as well as a number of other fringe players – in order to provide the funds for more signings.
Pulis has already landed striker Jay Rodriguez from Southampton for £12 million and is now looking at defensive reinforcements.
The Baggies finished in a commendable 10th spot last campaign, but their form tailed off towards the end of the season.
Pulis is hoping to fend off interest from a number of other Premier League clubs for Gibbs, who has 10 England caps to his name, in order to bring the defender to West Brom.
Apart from a brief loan spell at Norwich City a decade ago, the Lambeth-born defender has spent his entire career at Arsenal.
However, having fallen out of favour under Wenger, his days at the Emirates are numbered. Now in his prime, Gibbs needs to be playing regular football and a move elsewhere is his only option.
Pulis is renowned as a defensive coach and a switch to West Brom could revive his career and international ambitions.
He has no shortage of admirers and for that reason, Pulis will be determined to get a deal wrapped up as soon as possible. Solid defensively, the 27-year-old is also an attacking threat.
It shouldn’t take much of a compromise for both clubs to come to an agreement. The rest will be up to the player himself.
