Could these Arsenal and Liverpool veterans be some of the summer’s free agents?
With just a month to go before the Premier League season draws to a close, time is running out for clubs to tie down players in the final year of their contracts. Below is a club-by-club summary of every player who is yet to be offered a new deal. Those who do not sign a new contract will be available on a free transfer for next season.
ARSENAL
Saluting the Old Guard
Club captain Mikel Arteta looks set to leave the club on a free at the end of the season after spending five years at the Emirates. The Spaniard amassed over 100 appearances for the Gunners over that period and helped the club to FA Cup glory on two occasions. He has already been linked with a coaching role; either at Pep Guardiola’s Man City or London rivals Tottenham.
Veteran midfielders Tomáš Rosicky and Mathieu Flamini also appear to be on the way out. Rosicky; who is held in high regard amongst the Arsenal supporters, has missed most of the season through yet another long-term injury and will likely return to the Czech Republic should he decide against retirement. His midfield partner Flamini, of whom much has been said regarding the achievements he and his business partner have made in the field of science, has been linked with a return to France though it is likely he’ll become the latest player to join the ever-expanding MLS.
ASTON VILLA
Jumping Ship
31-year old Kieran Richardson is arguably the biggest of the two names leaving relegation-confirmed Aston Villa. The England international joined the club at the start of last season and will be looking to greener pastures for next season. The other player available on a free is Charles N’Zogbia, who many Villa fans consider to be partly to blame for the downward spiral the club has suffered. The Frenchman joined the club in 2011 for a hefty sum of £9.5 million but failed to live up to the expectations placed on him.
BOURNEMOUTH
Out with the Quick Fixes
Artur Boruc and Sylvain Distin, 36 and 38 respectively, look unlikely to have their contracts renewed at Bournemouth. The duo were both signed on year-long deals and with the club having confirmed their Premier League status for another season it makes sense to bring in new talent for next season. The contract of Stéphane Zubar has also run down. The Guadeloupean defender has been away from the club on various loan spells since 2013.
CHELSEA
The End of an Era?
It’s hard to believe but legendary defender John Terry could be on his way out at the end of the season. Terry; who has captained the club to four Premier League titles and a Champions League crown, is yet to be offered a new deal by the club and looks set to leave. The media have been quick to speculate that he could join former team-mate Frank Lampard at New York City FC but the stalwart has also been linked with a move into management. Earlier in the year, it was reported that Terry could become manager of Danish side Brondy upon the expiration of his contract in London.
Marco Amelia; signed as an emergency goalkeeper following the injury to Thibaut Courtois earlier in the season, will also see his contract run down without having played a match for the club.
