Could Sunderland have the upper hand in pursuit of boyhood fan Marcus Maddison?

Sunderland are set for another season in League One. But after getting over the disappointment of a play-off final loss, Jack Ross must learn from last season’s mistakes to deliver promotion in the 2019/20 season.

If the Black Cats recruit wisely, they will be favourites to win automatic promotion. And one experienced League One star should be on their wishlist: Marcus Maddison.

The left-footed midfield playmaker once again impressed for Posh, scoring 10 goals and providing 23 assists in the 2018/19 season.

Maddison has consistently hit high figures in goals and assists while with Peterborough. In 223 Posh games, he has scored 52 goals and provided 84 assists.

With these numbers, the 25-year-old will be a man in demand this summer. And Sunderland could well have the upper hand in this pursuit.

, Maddison is a boyhood Sunderland fan. Surely a move to the Stadium of Light would appeal to him.

Sunderland should use this factor to their advantage. Offering him the chance to take his boyhood club back to the Championship during the peak of his career would be an exciting potential project for Maddison.

If Ross can sell this project to Maddison and convince him to join Sunderland rather than move to the Championship, then this would be a statement of intent ahead of the 2019/20 promotion push.
