Could Spurs receive boost from reported Diego Costa decision?
One of the more interesting rumours ahead of the most recent January window came that Spurs were interested in Diego Costa.
Costa had not long become a free agent after leaving Atletico Madrid. Tottenham meanwhile, were seemingly looking to bolster their attacking ranks ahead of the second-half of the campaign.
Of course, no move would take place. But it appears that Costa is now closing in on finding his next club – and his decision could perhaps prove beneficial to Jose Mourinho.
, the striker has agreed a deal in principle with Benfica. It is suggested that he is set to link up with the Portuguese side next season.
In truth, it was always incredibly difficult to imagine Costa ending up in North London. But he may well be a player that hands Spurs a summer transfer boost.
, Tottenham have informed Benfica that they will not trigger the £36 million option to sign Carlos Vinicius permanently.
However, the report noted that they are still willing to pay £17 million for the forward.
It was not suggested what Benfica’s stance on that sort of bid would be. But if they are braced to sign another striker, surely they will be more receptive to reaching a compromise.
Even as a free agent, Costa is unlikely to come cheap. So perhaps Benfica may feel that something closer to £17 million is better than digging their heels in with Tottenham apparently unwilling to pay significantly more.
