Could Rangers’s Ross McCrorie prove biggest beneficiary from Nikola Katic blow?

Rangers have been dealt a significant blow ahead of next season with that Nikola Katic will be out of the foreseeable future with an injury.

It arguably looks to be extremely concerning that the Gers have been unable to put a timescale on when Katic may be back.

Although his form has been criticised at times, the 23-year-old looks to have the potential to be a key man for Steven Gerrard’s side for years to come.

It remains to be seen whether Katic will miss the start of next season. But some of the Ibrox faithful may be hoping that Gerrard will be tempted into the transfer market to secure cover.

However, perhaps it may be a player already on the club’s books who may prove to be the biggest beneficiary.

Ross McCrorie is, of course, still on loan at Portsmouth. And his season may yet have one more week to go with Pompey looking to secure promotion through the play-offs.

It will be interesting to see what the future holds for McCrorie. It seemed a surprise to many that he was loaned out in the first place.

McCrorie plans uncertain

Some may now be expecting McCrorie to be loaned out again upon his return. Rangers return to action in less than a month so Gerrard may have been wary of using him immediately.

But with Katic now sidelined, perhaps a change of plan is required.

McCrorie faces a tough task forcing his way into Rangers’s midfield. And with Katic now out, perhaps Gerrard may be tempted to count him amongst his centre-back options.

There are still hurdles to clear. George Edmundson and Filip Helander both showed that they are capable of colossal performances alongside Connor Goldson.

But with games coming thick and fast, McCrorie can surely expect an opportunity to impress, especially now that Katic looks set to be out.

Katic’s injury should perhaps tempt Gerrard to delay any decision on McCrorie’s future. And maybe it may only take one inspired performance for the youngster to secure a spot in his manager’s plans for the coming campaign.
