Could Newcastle’s reported interest in Gonzalo Higuain be a hint at new manager?
Newcastle United have been linked with a fourth Juventus player this week after reports emerged Gonzalo Higuain is being targeted by the club’s potential new owners – but could such a move hint that Rafa Benitez is on his way back?
Higuain, 32, has had a hand in 16 goals this season during 34 league and cup appearances this season – but has only started 23 of those Juve outings. He is expected to enter the final 12 months of his contract at Juventus.
that Newcastle want to sign Higuain this summer as the Toon’s potential new owners have identified a new striker is needed – given the poor form of Joelinton, who has netted just one league goal since his move.
The report states Juventus will be willing to sanction a loan deal for Higuain, if those interested in landing the former Chelsea, Real Madrid and Napoli star pay his £130,000-a-week wages. Higuain could form a reunion with Rafa Benitez.

The two worked together at Napoli, and Benitez is being strongly linked with a return to Newcastle after becoming an icon on Tyneside for his three-year spell at the club. Benitez and Mauricio Pochettino are being targeted.
Benitez once described Higuain, during the duo’s time together at Napoli, as one of the best strikers in the world, : “Higuain is a great striker and I think one of the best in the world. I’ve worked with many excellent forwards.”
So, could Newcastle’s reported interest in bringing 75-time Argentina international to St. James’ Park this summer, suggest that the Toon are looking to convince Benitez of a return – by signing players that Benitez admires.
Indeed, the feeling is mutual between Higuain and Benitez. In a piece on Benitez’s website, Higuain is quoted as saying: “Rafa is one of the greatest coach’s in the world”.
The new owners trying to sign Higuain is surely a hint that they could be looking to hire Benitez.
