Could Manchester City be about to land Juventus’ Dani Alves?
Pep Guardiola’s plan to bring new full-backs to the Etihad has taken yet another turn, with Juventus man Dani Alves the latest to be linked.
Manchester City were expected to secure the signature of at least one of Ryan Bertrand or Kyle Walker, but are yet to make a deal for either. Monaco’s Benjamin Mendy had been an earlier target before a £40 million price-tag forced the Citizens to look elsewhere.
The latest update comes from , who claim that a deal will be made for the 34-year-old, involving a fee of around £5 million.
What would he add to Guardiola’s side?
Alves would bring plenty of experience, knowledge of the manager and his demanding playing style, and a track record of success.
The Brazilian international has reached a century of caps for his country and holds three Champions League titles amongst the 34 senior trophies his illustrious career has brought.
Despite coming to the end of his career, Alves has shown – particularly against the bright, attacking youth of Monaco in last season’s European semi-final – that he still has plenty to offer. Over two legs, the right-back was unquestionably player of the tie as he was involved in all four of his side’s goals.
There is no doubt that City need full-back reinforcements before the season begins, and acquiring a player of Alves’ calibre would be a strong start. Regardless of his advancing years, the 34-year-old made 33 appearances across all competitions last season, scoring six and assisting seven from his defensive position.
Guardiola, through his past experience with Alves, will be aware of the player’s flexibility as a full-back, wing-back or even a winger, if required. This would be an invaluable asset for a manager who frequently alters their approach.
How likely is a move to Manchester?
Dani Alves still has the ability to have an impact on any side and could help Guardiola to instil his methods at the Etihad. His previous years spent playing for the Spaniard were filled with glory, if just a fraction of that success could be replicated in Manchester then a £5m fee would be a steal.
It is no secret where reinforcements are most needed at the Etihad and Alves fits the bill, even as a short-term solution to help improve on a trophyless season. Guardiola knows he cannot afford a repeat and bringing in the experience and reputation of the Brazilian, a player he knows well will be a good move for all parties.
