Could Liverpool’s Harry Wilson have central midfield future after Derby experiment?
When rapid winger Harry Wilson went on loan from Liverpool to Derby County, few expected him to end up playing in a central midfield role for the Championship side.
Yet after two games, Frank Lampard’s experiment appears to have paid dividends as the Welshman has immediately looked at home in his new position, scoring against Birmingham after looking comfortable against Chelsea.
Lampard, himself one of the greatest players in the position of his generation, knows exactly what it takes to play in such a role and has put his faith in the loanee.
With plenty of quality and talent on the ball, Wilson looks calm and in control in possession and has not been challenged by the more physical side of the game which can be avoided when out wide.
Looking ahead to his Liverpool return, it is hard to envisage that he will become a long-term option in the middle of the park given the wealth of competition, but it may well depend on how he performs throughout the rest of this season.
His flexibility would certainly appeal to the likes of Jurgen Klopp and, if it were to come down to it, could give him an advantage over the likes of fellow youngsters Ryan Kent and Ben Woodburn in vying for a spot in the squad.
