Could Jamie Shackleton be sold by Leeds United this summer?

Leeds United boss Andrea Radrizzani has been a solid chairman for the West Yorkshire side since his arrival at the club and that has included making sure the club is run on sound financial means.

That means not spending what they don’t have and occasionally having to take a hit with a player sale.

In 2018, it was Ronaldo Vieira who Leeds decided was expendable. The England under-21 international was sold to Sampdoria to fund the arrival of Patrick Bamford.

Last summer, several names were flogged by the Whites. Bailey Peacock-Farrell went to Burnley, Pontus Jansson was sold to Brentford whilst Jack Clarke was snapped up by Tottenham Hotspur. Kemar Roofe, the club’s top-scorer, was allowed to join Anderlecht.

All these transfers helped Leeds strengthen their squad. Whilst potential promotion to the Premier League may alleviate some of that need in the upcoming summer, Leeds will still likely have their eyes on making a big player sale to help buff up the coffers.

Looking at the current Leeds United team, the likes of Liam Cooper and Kalvin Phillips are immediate candidates. However, Leeds will see them both as indispensable members of the first-team.

Which leaves Jamie Shackleton.

Last season, it seemed the midfield livewire was going to become a future Leeds United star. His performance in the first leg of the play-off semi-final, in particular, was eye-wateringly good.

But he has struggled with injuries this term and not managed to maintain that push to become a Leeds United regular.

With the emergence of Robbie Gotts, Leeds could easily see Shackleton as a way to make money this summer.

The youngster’s contract also expires in the summer of 2021 and there has been no talk of a new deal in recent months.

Instead, Leeds United could easily decide that Shackleton is worth cashing in on if a sufficient offer comes in for his services in the weeks or months to come.

If Leeds are to send another sacrificial lamb away to help them fund player acquisition, then Shackleton might be the most likely option.
