Could display for under 23s earn Reece Oxford a West Ham recall?

After months of stagnation and disappointment, Reece Oxford finally appears to be back on the right track as he scored and produced a solid performance for West Ham under 23s against Chelsea on Friday.

In the summer, reported that the Hammers were open to the idea of selling the youngster and were prepared to accept £10 million for him and he is yet to do much to justify anywhere near that value.

However, on Friday, he upped his game as he rose highest to head home and score West Ham’s first goal and was one of the best performers defensively too.

One momentary lapse did allow Daishawn Redan to score a second for Chelsea on their way to a last gasp 3-2 win, but it would be harsh to criticise the 19-year-old for a solid display.

The captain is still only young and has room to learn and improve and it will take more and more performances like this one in order to convince Manuel Pellegrini that he deserves a shot in the first team.

Oxford’s West Ham career isn’t over yet and finding this kind of form consistently will inevitably bring him new chances as it has for fellow youngsters.
