‘Continues to possess a worrying penchant’: Aston Villa star gets 4/10 for international display
Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings has been criticised for enduring lapses of concentration while representing England on Sunday.
Gareth Southgate elected to start Mings during the Three Lions’ final Euro 2020 warm-up friendly with Romania. The 28-year-old had also started last Wednesday’s win over Austria to move onto since his debut in 2019.
Mings now heads into this summer’s European Championship as one of Southgate’s first-choice centre-backs. But his performances entering the tournament failed to hit the heights the England boss or Villans star would have liked.
Mings produced a mistake within moments of kick-off on Sunday by letting the ball drift out for an avoidable corner. He gave away a foul on the hallway line nearing half-time that almost cost England a goal, as well.
But Nicolae Stanciu’s speculative long-range attempt to catch Sam Johnstone off his line did not work out. Yet Mings’ decision-making was often questionable against Romania and could have hurt the Three Lions against tougher opposition.
It also meant the national press criticised Mings’ performance, with awarding him just a 4/10. No other England player scored lower than five, while James Ward-Prowse – who will – and Jack Grealish earned joint-high eights.
“Rash decision-making at times against Austria and endured another poor afternoon back at the Riverside,” Sky wrote on Mings. “Desire never in doubt but had lapses in concentration, was not tight enough to man at times and continues to possess a worrying penchant to charge out of position.”.
TBR’s view: Mings issues nothing new for Aston Villa
Aston Villa will not have been surprised to see Mings endure a few off moments for England against Romania. While a fairly consistent performer for Dean Smith, the 6 ft 4 enforcer is culpable of enduring lapses of concentration.
Occasionally those mistakes have cost Aston Villa goals, but not on a level to cause consistent concern. He also brings physicality to the position, is brave with his challengers and can be a leader at the back.
Mings also had some moments for England against Romania to write home about on Sunday. The Aston Villa titan blocked Alexandru Cicaldau’s shot in the closing stages as Romania began to cause problems. His off-moments did not hurt his confidence, either, and will go into Euro 2020 believing he will have a big say on results.
