‘Conte’s gutted’: Gold says key Spurs player has suffered injury setback, could now miss Manchester City clash

Tottenham Hotspur journalist Alasdair Gold has revealed that Oliver Skipp has suffered a setback during his injury recovery and Antonio Conte is really upset on hearing the news.

Spurs had the worst few days of their season last week. They suffered home defeats at the hands of Southampton and Wolves, and the pressure is slowly mounting on Conte.

One of the key reasons why Spurs lost both games is how easily they were overrun in midfield. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, arguably Tottenham’s best player since the start of last season, was even dropped against Wolves, which highlights the problems Conte has in the middle of the park.

Skipp would’ve been ideal for Tottenham in midfield now but a setback in his injury is really bad news and Conte is absolutely gutted.

Antonio Conte is really gutted about injury to Oliver Skipp

Gold said in a yesterday: “I don’t know when we’re going to get Skippy back from injury.

“He had this groin injury a fair few days back. (Then), he had a little problem with an infection during his recovery.

“Whether we’re going to see him against Manchester City (on Saturday), it looks a bit doubtful.

“Conte’s gutted, he really is, he really sees him (Skipp) as an important player.”

It’s never wise to be overly reliant on a 21-year-old but Tottenham’s midfield looks so bad at the moment that Skipp really does seem like their saviour.

The young Englishman has played 18 times in the Premier League already this season and he has been really impressive. Some Spurs fans even think he’s their best midfielder and we really cannot argue with that.

If Gold’s words are anything to go by, Skipp’s infection is likely to rule him out of the game against Manchester City this weekend.

That is a big blow and if Conte cannot work his magic in the next few days, Spurs could easily succumb to their fourth defeat in a row in the Premier League on Saturday, which would all but crush their top-four hopes.
