Conte says Tottenham player is now fully fit again, he could feature tonight

Antonio Conte that Steven Bergwijn is back to full fitness and could feature tonight against Leicester City.

Bergwijn has not featured for Spurs since Boxing Day. The calf injury he sustained became the latest blow in an already turbulent spell for the Dutchman under Conte.

He is yet to make a Premier League start for the Italian. And he did not feature in either of Conte’s first two league games in charge. But he has also shone in the Carabao Cup tie with West Ham in December.

Conte suggested that Bergwijn was short of being fully fit for Sunday’s North London derby. However, ahead of the game, the Tottenham boss insisted that he had no choice but to ask Bergwijn to take a spot on the bench.

Obviously, that clash was subsequently postponed. And one Tottenham player who may have benefitted from that controversial decision is Bergwijn.

Conte was asked about the 24-year-old’s fitness ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Leicester.

“Bergwijn, yes. Bergwijn has recovered from his calf injury, but he was already in the squad against Arsenal,” .

Ideal opportunity for Bergwijn to prove point amid Tottenham exit speculation

The former PSV Eindhoven man is one of the players linked with leaving Tottenham this month. In fact, it has been reported this month that Ajax have had a £15 million bid for the forward rejected.

It remains to be seen if the Eredivisie side do manage to get a deal done. But certainly, an impressive showing against Leicester or Chelsea will leave Conte with plenty to ponder.

Tottenham fans know how good Bergwijn can be. But he has not shown that level anywhere near often enough since arriving. Five goals in over 60 games is clearly not good enough.

But a game-changing display in one of the next two games could surely see the idea of a January transfer removed from the table.
