Conte says he’s ‘very pleased’ with one Tottenham player at Chelsea
Antonio Conte that he was happy with the performance of Steven Bergwijn as Tottenham Hotspur suffered a defeat at Chelsea on Sunday.
Bergwijn was, unsurprisingly, promoted to the starting lineup for the trip to Stamford Bridge. It was the Dutchman who inspired their stunning win at Leicester last Wednesday, scoring twice in stoppage-time to send the away end into a frenzy.
Unfortunately, it proved to be a frustrating day for Tottenham. Conte’s men lost 2-0 after two second-half goals from the home side. The result was all the more disappointing after Harry Kane had had a first-half strike ruled out for a foul on Thiago Silva.
Bergwijn was unable to build on his brace. But he was arguably one of Tottenham’s best players over the 90 minutes. He looked lively throughout. And he was clearly up for the fight, getting involved in a couple of clashes.
Plenty of Tottenham fans took to Twitter to praise Bergwijn following his performance in the loss. They felt that he was one who could hold his head up high.
And it appears that Conte has a similar opinion of the 24-year-old’s display. The Italian suggested that he was pleased with what he saw from the forward.
“Steven today played a good game. We are very pleased because he was injured for a long time,” . “Now that Sonny is out, for us it was important. Today Lucas was not 100% in a good physical condition because he had a muscular problem after Leicester, also Skipp.
“Bergwijn played a good game and I enjoy my time in Tottenham to work with these players, because they want to work and to improve.”

It had appeared that Bergwijn could be one player who leaves Tottenham this month. He has been linked with a move to Ajax in this window.
However, these last two games appear to have ensured that he will be going nowhere. Obviously, the two goals against Leicester were huge moments. They will be remembered by Tottenham fans for years to come.
But, in a way, the bright display at Chelsea could be even more significant. He showed what he could do over 90 minutes.
Bergwijn still has doubters to silence at Tottenham. But he has definitely given himself a platform to build from.
