Community Shield 2025: How to watch, team news and prediction for the Crystal Palace vs Liverpool clash

The stage is set for the traditional Premier League curtain raiser as Liverpool face Crystal Palace in the 2025 Community Shield at Wembley.

Defending Premier League champions Liverpool have a long and proud history in the competition and are looking to lift the trophy for the first time since 2022 in their 25th appearance.

By contrast, Crystal Palace are appearing in the Community Shield for the first time as Oliver Glasner looks to add to the FA Cup triumph that earned them their place in the competition.

The Community Shield is the first official game of the English season and an early chance to see new signings in competitive action, with Liverpool likely to include club-record signing Florian Wirtz in the team.

With both teams looking to claim the first silverware of the season at Wembley, TBR Football brings you everything you need to know about the 2025 Community Shield.

Crystal Palace Team News

Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace squad is in relatively good shape heading into the fixture.

Long-term absentee Cheick Doucoure will miss the game as he continues to recover from a serious knee injury sustained midway through the 2024/25 season. He has not featured in Palace’s pre-season programme to date.

Fellow long-term casualty Chadi Riad is also a doubt after a serious ligament injury. He is now back in training, but is unlikely to make the squad for the Wembley showpiece.

All eyes will be on transfer-linked Marc Guehi, who could leave the club this summer. New signings Walter Benitez and Borno Sosa could both feature.

Liverpool Team News

Arne Slot is expected to be able to call upon influential goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who left the club’s pre-season tour early due to personal issues.

Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley both face a race to be fit to take their place in the Liverpool defence. However, Virgil Van Dijk is expected to play.

If Bradley is unavailable, new signing Jeremie Frimpong could be set for his first competitive Liverpool start as they prepare for life after Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Fellow new arrival Hugo Ekitike could also make his first competitive start for the club, as they attempt to break the deadlock in the Alexander Isak transfer saga.

Who is the referee for the Community Shield?

Experienced Premier League referee Chris Kavanagh has been handed the responsibility of refereeing the Community Shield final.

Kavanagh will be assisted by James Mainwaring and Wade Smith, with Tony Harrington appointed as the fourth official.

Paul Tierney is in the VAR hotseat and will be assisted by Nick Hopton.

Crystal Palace vs Liverpool Prediction

Although Liverpool come into the game as heavy favourites, having invested heavily in their title-winning squad, they have more unknown quantities as Slot looks to integrate several new signings.

As a result, the game may be tighter than expected. However, Liverpool should still have enough to claim the Community Shield for a 17th time.

Predicted scoreline: Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool.
