‘Coming out the woodwork’: Rangers legend Souness takes swipe at Ibrox club’s detractors

Graeme Souness has taken a swipe at the ‘anti-Rangers brigade’ who revelled in his former club’s downfall.

After climbing their way through Scottish football’s lower leagues, Rangers’ comeback was sealed today with their confirmation as Scottish Premiership champions.

Souness, who won titles as both player and manager during his time in Glasgow, was delighted as news came through that Celtic had failed to beat Dundee United at Tannadice.

That result meant a comeback for John Kennedy’s men was mathematically impossible, and Steven Gerrard could now celebrate his first title since arriving at Ibrox in 2018.

Like Gerrard, Souness is considered a legendary figure by fans of both Liverpool and Rangers, and he was savouring the 40-year-old’s triumph.

Speaking on , he said: “Phenomenal. Phenomenal. They’ve been fantastic.

“Fair play to the players and the staff, and – I have to say – the Rangers support.

“In their history, they’ve never had turmoil like they’ve had to experience in the last 10 years. Being thrown out of the league, unfairly in my opinion, and all the anti-Rangers brigade that were coming out of the woodwork out there.

“And when you’re in the third tier and you’ve got 50,000 people turning up to your stadium, that’s a proper support.

“So I’m absolutely delighted. There’ll be some parties going on right now.”

Rangers have gone unbeaten in 32 Premiership matches this season, conceding just nine goals in the process.

Speaking after their 3-0 win against St Mirren on Saturday, Gerrard told : “Tonight we want to let this soak and settle in, we’re on a big high because we know we are 99.9% there, and that is an incredible place to be in.

“This is a monumental achievement, what the players are about to achieve.”

Rangers face their rivals at Celtic Park in the next round of Premiership fixtures on March 21.
