‘Come on now’: Former Rangers star expresses shock at reported £52m Bayern Munich bid
As improbable as it may sound to anyone who witnessed his short-lived stint in Scottish football, Umar Sadiq to Bayern Munich is a genuine transfer story.
Spanish outlet have reported that the former Rangers forward is a target for the European champions, who are said to be willing to meet his release clause.
That clause currently stands at around £52 million, but will rise to around £69 million should his side Almeria achieve promotion from the Segunda Division to La Liga.
Sadiq made just four appearances during his loan spell at Rangers, with his most memorable contribution a dire performance in the 2018/19 Betfred Cup semi-final against Aberdeen.
His season-long loan spell was cut short five months in, and the then-Roma striker was sent out to Perugia and Serbian side Partizan before making a permanent switch to Almeria.
He’s been a success at the Spanish club, scoring 17 goals in 32 appearances, and that form has now reportedly caught the eye of Bundesliga giants Bayern.
Andy Halliday was an unused substitute for that semi-final, and has expressed his surprise at Bayern’s apparent interest in his former team-mate.
Speaking on , the Hearts midfielder said: “When Rangers signed him, Kenny Miller spoke to Joleon Lescott who said ‘the boy Umar Sadiq is going to be a top, top player… he’ll do really well for you.’
“I think he played one game, never settled in or played that well.
“If you told me he was going to go for €60m I’d have said, ‘Come on now, stop trash talking me.’
“He wasn’t a good player in training but I’ve played with hundreds of strikers specifically who are not good trainers and they just come alive when it comes to a game.
“So he could have been that type of player, but the fact of the matter is when you don’t train well and the manager is watching you when you just come into a team, they are not going to pick you.
“So that’d be the most surprising transfer of all time. €60m? Bayern Munich? Aye it would be.
“I’ve heard he has done really well since he’s left so fair play to him.”
