Coach says it’s a ‘great honour’ for ‘very quick, very clever’ gem to join Liverpool
RB Salzburg head coach Jesse Marsch has praised Takumi Minamino for his conduct ahead of his move to Liverpool and admitted it was a “great honour” for him to link up with Jurgen Klopp’s side at Anfield.
The 25-year-old spent five years with the Austrian side and made almost 200 appearances in all competitions before making the move to join the Reds in January in a deal.
According to , first made contact with the Japan international back in November 2019, before securing a deal to sign him at the start of 2020.

Klopp was delighted with Minamino’s arrival, telling the Liverpool : “This is fabulous news – a wonderful signing. We are really, really happy about this.
“Takumi is a very quick, very clever player, he finds space between the lines. He is brave with the ball but also brave without the ball – a proper team player. He makes the best of himself for the benefit of others.”
Marsch said Minamino made it clear to Salzburg that he wanted to move to Anfield, but showed his professionalism in knuckling down for the remainder of his time in Austria.
“Taki made it clear at the beginning of the talks in November that he would like to leave in winter,” the Salzburg boss told .
“He wanted to make sure that he behaved best in the rest of his time in Salzburg. We helped him think carefully about his next step. It was clear to us: He will leave us.
“In the end, he went to the reigning Champions League winners, a deal that means a lot to the entire club and is a great honour.”

Minamino may not have been given many opportunities to impress for Liverpool since his move, but if there’s a manager who knows how to give newcomers time to adapt before unleashing their full potential, it is Klopp.
Fabinho, who joined Liverpool in July 2018, famously had to wait until mid-September to make his competitive debut, and it proved a smart decision by Klopp, with the player now an excellent asset for the Reds.
As Marsch made clear, Minamino’s conduct before leaving Salzburg was excellent, which suggests he has just the kind of attitude to thrive at Anfield, and with a full pre-season under his belt, he could well go on to great things in 2020-21.
