Coach says £30m striker wanted by Tottenham is ‘exceptional’

Tottenham Hotspur are likely to be busy in the transfer market as Ange Postecoglou looks to build on his solid maiden season at N17.

Spurs are off the mark, having signed Archie Gray from Leeds United, with Joe Rodon going the other way, and more signings could follow.

Tottenham were in contention for a top-four finish for most of last season and were even dark horses for the Premier League title at one point.

The job now for the Spurs hierarchy is to strengthen the squad so Postecoglou’s charges can last the distance next season.

Tottenham could well look to bolster their attacking ranks, with numerous wingers and forwards having been linked with a move to Spurs in recent weeks.

Tottenham target Jonathan David hailed by Steven Caldwell

One such player is Jonathan David, who has gone from strength to strength for Lille and Canada in the past few years.

TBR Football sources confirmed in late June that Tottenham have been making enquiries for David ahead of a potential approach.

Much has been said about the 24-year-old’s talent and potential, and now one of his former coaches has spoken highly about him as well.

Steven Caldwell, Canada’s assistant manager between 2019 and 2021, believes the reported Tottenham target is world-leading in several aspects.

“Very good finisher, but in the red of Canada he’s been a bit hesitant in front of goal,” Caldwell told Harry De Cosemo.

“He’s doing a lot of work off the ball as well, he’s a real team player, Jonathan David. He’s one of the best defensive forwards I’ve ever worked with.

“The cut-off, the easy passes into midfield and things like that are outstanding.

“He’s a good presser, he understands cues when to press, he’s exceptional at that, as good as anybody in the world, I would say.

“And then the other side of his game is that he’s a stocky-looking guy but he’s quicker than he looks. He can shift when he wants, and for Lille he’s quite prolific.

“Normally, when he’s in front of the goal, he makes it count.”

David deemed ‘one of the best strikers in the world’

Jonathan David is a prolific striker, with 84 goals and 18 assists to his name from 183 Lille outings, plus 27 goals and 16 assists from 52 caps for Canada.

Indeed, Canadian sports expert Tony Marinaro previously described the reported Spurs target as “one of the best strikers in the world”.

Harry Kane is a great example of a prolific forward who also contributes in midfield and even defensively.

David is in that mould too, and with that in mind, Spurs really ought to push for him.
