Club may be willing to sell ‘fantastic striker’ on West Ham radar for £26m

West Ham United have been linked with Ajax’s Steven Bergwijn in recent weeks and speculation continues to do the rounds.

Just last week, Fabrizio Romano reported that the Hammers had the former Tottenham man firmly in their sights in the January transfer window.

“Understand Steven Bergwijn is one of the top targets for West Ham in the January transfer window in case they will be able to find budget after outgoings,” he wrote on .

Now, Dutch journalist Mike Verweij, writing on has reported that Ajax could eventually be willing to sell the reported Hammers target for around £26million.

The Eredivisie giants would effectively be recouping the fee they paid Spurs for the 26-year-old in the summer of 2022, suggested the reporter.

Verweij also speculates that West Ham may be interested in Bergwijn thanks to John Heitinga, who worked with him at Ajax and is now a coach for the Hammers.

“West Ham United has dormant interest,” Voetbal Zone quote him as saying.

“I think that Heitinga, who has been there for six months now, has seen that Bergwijn can be of value in West Ham’s playing style. Especially with his speed.

“I think that when Ajax gets the chance, perhaps not this winter, the club will cooperate in a transfer of Bergwijn. Only if they get their purchase price back, so around €30milllion.

“Then I immediately lost all my confidence in Heitinga. If he (Heitinga) starts recommending Bergwijn to West Ham, I will lose my confidence in him.

“That is the same as with Ten Hag, then he gives Ajax a lot of money.”

West Ham currently have a personnel crisis in attack, with four key Hammers players all unavailable at present.

Michail Antonio is out for up to six weeks with a knee injury, while Jarrod Bowen is sidelined for at least a fortnight with an ankle issue.

In addition, Lucas Paqueta could be out for two months with a calf injury and Mohammed Kudus is at the Africa Cup of Nations with Ghana.

Meanwhile, Bergwijn is a solid talent heading into his prime and, crucially, has Premier League experience, having played for Tottenham previously.

Former Spurs boss Antonio Conte deemed him a “fantastic striker” back in 2022, in conversation with .

Although ultimately it didn’t work out for Bergwijn at Tottenham, he may well feel he has unfinished business and welcome the opportunity to play in the Premier League once again.
