Newcastle could now cause Tottenham to miss out on a transfer target as negotiations begin.
There is just under a month remaining of the transfer window, and Newcastle are becoming particularly active as the Magpies near a deal to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.
Now – according to reports in Italy – Newcastle have opened talks over another signing, one that could throw a spanner in the works for Tottenham if an agreement materialises…
Newcastle signing Nicolas Gonzalez could see Tottenham miss out on Albert Gudmundsson
A story from claims that Newcastle are in discussions with Fiorentina over a £25m deal to sign Argentina international Nicolas Gonzalez.
Interestingly, the Italian news outlet state that Fiorentina will sign Albert Gudmundsson from Genoa as a replacement – if the Magpies end up taking the South American away from Florence.
Now, that could cause implications for Spurs.
An update from recently claimed that Tottenham are pushing hard to sign Gudmundsson, who shone in a centre-forward role last season with 16 goals in 37 appearances.
However, if Tottenham fail to get this deal wrapped up before Newcastle conclude talks with Fiorentina over Gonzalez, it could see Ange Postecoglou miss out on the Icelandic international this summer.
Spurs should consider hijacking Newcastle talks
Interestingly, Tottenham were also keen to sign Gonzalez back in August 2021 before he moved to Fiorentina from VfB Stuttgart – according to .
Both the Argentine and Gudmundsson are similar forwards, having scored 16 goals each last season from various positions across the attack, so if Fiorentina really do have the Icelandic forward lined up to replace Gonzalez, Spurs may as well cut to the chase and attempt to hijack Newcastle’s talks.
