Rangers are ‘desperately hoping’ that former Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard holds out until the summer before plotting an Aston Villa transfer for Glen Kamara.

That’s according to , who report the Gers fear fighting off interest to keep Kamara in Glasgow. The Premiership leaders are raring to retain the midfielder, but are aware of growing Premier League interest.

Everton, Southampton and Newcastle United are all paying close attention to the Finland international. So, Aston Villa may have to expediate their pursuit, with Gerrard keen for the 26-year-old to follow him to Birmingham.

Aston Villa raided Ibrox in November to poach Gerrard so the Rangers boss replaced Dean Smith at Villa Park. The Liverpool legend now wants Kamara at the club, too, after making him one of the Premiership’s top midfielders.

Kamara joined Rangers under Gerrard for a bargain in 2019 and only signed a new four-year contract last September. But the deal is not enough for the Gers to fend off all interest if vultures descend on Glasgow.

Reports by when Kamara put pen to paper noted he agreed to sign as Rangers offered a compromise. As well as rewarding the former Dundee star for his performances, they agreed to sell if they receive suitable offers.

Gerrard will likely be aware of any such compromise as the Aston Villa boss eyes a transfer for Rangers’ Kamara. But the England icon’s replacement, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, is also keen to deny a January exit.

Van Bronckhorst wants Rangers to retain Kamara in January to aid their Premiership title defence. So, the Gers hope Gerrard now waits until at least the summer before plotting a reunion at Aston Villa.
