Club chairman responds when asked by Newcastle fan if player has ‘buyback clause’

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has responded to a Newcastle United fan on Twitter when asked if on-fire striker Ivan Toney had a buyback clause in his contract.

Toney, 23, has been in stunning form for Peterborough this season, after joining the club in the summer of 2018. Last season, he was very good – scoring 23 goals and laying on eight assists in 55 league and cup outings.

This time around, Toney has continued his excellent form – and in fact – improved upon it. He has now netted 11 in 15 League One outings, a bid difference to his early career struggles that saw him fail to gain a place in the Toon senior side.

Indeed, Toney only made four appearances for Newcastle after coming through the academy. Now, a Newcastle fan asked MacAnthony if a buyback clause is included in Toney’s deal. MacAnthony confirmed there is not, but another clause is.

TBR’s view – Should Newcastle consider re-signing Toney?

Sean Longstaff starred in League One on loan at Blackpool and just months later, the midfielder was being linked with a big-money move to Manchester United after starring in Newcastle’s midfield engine room.

Toney is one of the most lethal strikers in League One. He is still young, English and is expected to go on and have a career far higher than the third tier. But do Newcastle need him? Probably not.

The Toon continue to place faith in Joelinton, while the return of Andy Carroll has delighted Toon fans. Dwight Gayle remains on the books.
