Ciro Immobile’s previous struggles abroad must concern Tottenham Hotspur
With the season at an end, the transfer rumours are now beginning to swirl. Tottenham Hotspur have already been linked with a host of names, including in the striker department. Spurs are still looking for someone to effectively support Harry Kane as the main man at the club. The last two summers saw Vincent Janssen and Fernando Llorente tasked with the role. Both failed to live up to the task.
This summer a fresh name has been linked with the role. Lazio striker Ciro Immobile is reportedly a target for Spurs this summer.that Tottenham have often watched the Italian international this season. If they have, then they will have been impressed by what they saw. Immobile has been in fine form for Lazio this term. His 41 goals in 46 games for the capital club make him one of Europe’s most potent strikers this season.
Therefore, if Tottenham could bring him to North London, it would surely be a coup for the club and a move that might finally the job they have failed to do in the past two summers.
But here is the warning. Whilst Immobile has proved a phenom in Italian football when he has moved abroad things have been much different.
Back in 2014, off the back of an impressive season with Torino, German side Borussia Dortmund snapped up the striker. Tasked with replacing Robert Lewandowski it was always going to be a big ask for the Italian.
Things did not work out. He scored just three goals in the Bundesliga all season and, come the summer, was shipped out on a loan-to-permanent deal at Spanish side Sevilla.
Once again, playing abroad did not agree with Immobile. He struggled to impress at Sevilla, spending most of his time on the bench and was eventually loaned back to Torino after just six months at the Sanchez Pizjuan.
That summer he joined Lazio and has been fantastic ever since, scoring 67 goals in 87 appearances for the Biancocelesti. But his 18 months playing abroad highlight how Immobile might be a homebird best kept in his native Italy.
It is certainly something for Tottenham to consider, before splashing the cash on the Serie A goal machine.
