Ryan Christie’s Celtic contract is up at the end of the season and on Thursday night against RB Leipzig, he did not take one of the surely dwindling opportunities to impress and prove to the club that it is worth extending.
Just three days later, he appeared determined to right that wrong. Introduced as a half-time substitute with the Betfred Cup semi-final between the Bhoys and Hearts still 0-0, Christie pulled the game his way.
He won a penalty, was unfortunate to see a shot that looked over the line not given as a goal until James Forrest prodded home before scoring the goal of the match with a rifled left-foot shot into the top corner.
Performances like that will make both Brendan Rodgers and those in the corridors of power at Celtic consider extending that expiring contract.
Rodgers was definitely impressed with Christie’s display and went on record saying he wishes to keep the fringe player.
He : “Ryan was just sensational. He’s someone that of course we would look to commit to. The club have been talking to his representatives but I’m not aware of any movement.
“Ryan is definitely a player that we would love to keep. He is a fantastic player. He’s at a really good age, so he can make a valuable contribution to this team.”
Now, Celtic must back their manager and tie down a player he is clearly keen on.
