Chris Waddle says Tottenham need to prioritise finding cover for Harry Kane
Chris Waddle has claimed that Tottenham need to prioritise signing a new striker before the transfer window closes this summer.
Spurs begin the new Premier League season on Sunday at home to Merseyside outfit Everton, but are going into the campaign with just one recognised senior centre-forward.
Harry Kane, 27, is the talisman for Jose Mourinho’s side in attack and has proven himself over a number of years to be a top-class striker.
But the England national team captain has had a spate of injury problems interrupt his football in recent seasons, which must be a concern for his manager Mourinho.
The North London club can fall back on versatile attackers such as Heung-Min Son or Lucas Moura to fill the role down the middle, but they haven’t had a senior back-up to Kane since Fernando Llorente left last summer.
Waddle has sent a transfer message to Spurs that they’ve got to try bring in a forward during the remainder of the window.
“Jose actually played on the front foot more than I expected last season but this is his team now and we will not know how he is going to set them up until the new campaign gets started. There is no reason why he can’t win games and entertain with the players he has got, but his priority has to be finding a back-up for Harry Kane,”

TBR’s View:
It’s a no-brainer for Spurs to push hard for the signing of a new striker this summer, as without an understudy for Kane they could be in real big trouble.
Mourinho’s side already have a hectic schedule due to their commitments both domestically and in Europe, so it’s impossible just to rely on one man, regardless of how good Kane is.
Spurs can look towards any of their main rivals in the Premier League to see they all have options at forward to allow them rotate.
Chelsea have the likes of Timo Werner, Olivier Giroud and Tammy Abraham, while Arsenal can use Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette or Eddie Nketiah.
