Chris Waddle says Newcastle have a ‘great’ 24-year-old in their ranks

Newcastle United legend Chris Waddle praised Magpies forward Alexander Isak for his opening goal against Chelsea on Saturday.

The 24-year-old opened the scoring for Newcastle in the 13th minute of the Premier League encounter at St James’ Park.

Lewis Miley did well in the build-up, picking the ball up on the edge of the box before picking out Isak in the area.

The Sweden international turned before slotting a finish past Robert Sanchez, and Waddle liked what he saw from the Newcastle man.

“Great finish. Great play. The first touch is good and the second chance is even better,” he told .

“Sanchez had no chance. He just turned and put the ball in that top corner. Great finish.”

Newcastle were pegged back by Chelsea in the 23rd minute through a neat Raheem Sterling free kick, but the Magpies went on to run riot in the second half.

Eddie Howe’s charges made it 2-1 on the hour mark as Jamaal Lascelles escaped the opposition defence to head Anthony Gordon’s delivery into the net.

It didn’t take long for another defensive calamity to give Newcastle a third goal.

Thiago Silva mis-controlled Cole Palmer’s pass, allowing Joelinton to race onto the loose ball and smash past Sanchez.

Things got even worse for Chelsea as Reece James was sent off in the 73rd minute for two bookings, before Gordon added a fourth goal in the 83rd minute.

Gordon latched onto Miguel Almiron’s ball over the top and ran through on goal before beating Sanchez with a low finish into the far corner.

It was a truly superb display for Newcastle and Isak will no doubt be buzzing to score and get 81 minutes on his return from injury.
