Chris Waddle claims England should play Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks
Chris Waddle has claimed that Tottenham’s Harry Winks should be promoted to the England starting XI on Monday night away to Bulgaria.
Gareth Southgate’s team suffered a 2-1 away defeat to Czech Republic on Friday and it was a lacklustre display from his side in a European Championship group stage qualifier.
It will be interesting to see how much he rotates his team selection for the next qualifying match.
Winks earned his last England cap back in November 2018 and has had to watch on from the bench in recent internationals.
The central midfielder has only played three senior games for England, but does have plenty of experience at club level in the Premier League and Champions League.
Waddle notes that Winks may have some confidence issues due to the form of his club Spurs, but feels he should come into the England midfield.
“It will be worth having a look at Harry Winks on Monday night [against Bulgaria]. He will have the ball in all areas from the back which is good and is always available,”
“Has he got the confidence? Not having a great time at Spurs, another player going on the park where his club form has dipped.”
TBR’s View:
With Jordan Henderson and Declan Rice delivering poor displays in the England midfield against Czech Republic, Southgate should look to some of the other options in his squad.
Winks is not in an ideal place right now considering the struggles of Spurs, but he’s a familiar face around the Three Lions group and it’s a slight surprise that he’s not had more chances.
The 23-year-old is an excellent technician that keeps the ball well and can keep possession ticking over quickly with his range of passing.
A fourth England cap could help restore some of his own confidence and he could do a strong job away to Bulgaria in helping England control the ball.
