Chris Sutton slams Rangers defender Connor Goldson

Chris Sutton has slammed Rangers defender Connor Goldson for the challenge that led to Celtic’s winner in the Scottish League Cup final, .

The Gers somehow did not come away from Hampden Park with the trophy. Rangers dominated the large majority of the game and probably would have been comfortably ahead had they come up against a different goalkeeper.

Fraser Forster was inspired on the day. And Rangers fans would have been forgiven for fearing the worst as the game remained goalless as Celtic brought Odsonne Edouard on.

It was not Edouard who bagged the decisive goal. But he did make a major contribution as it was the striker who was brought down by Goldson 35 yards out for the free-kick that led to Christopher Jullien’s winner.

Jullien was in an offside position. But after criticising the officials for not raising the flag, Sutton also slammed the Rangers man for swiping Edouard.

“Just going back to the Goldson challenge, hindsight’s a wonderful thing. What a stupid challenge, whether it was laying down a marker or not,” .

While Goldson may have been wary of letting Edouard getting round him, it did not appear to be a challenge that had to be made. He seemed to have little chance of winning the ball and ultimately got nowhere near getting a foot on it.

Of course, Rangers have every right to feel aggrieved. They held their line and the flag should have gone up. But that perhaps should not let Goldson off the hook for making such a rash challenge that looked quite unnecessary.
