Chris Sutton says which team he’d rather be in the Premier League title race – Arsenal or Liverpool
The Premier League title race is really heating up.
Indeed, while Liverpool may be eight points clear at the top of the table, Arsenal do have a game in hand, and the Reds face Manchester City this weekend.
Position | Team | Played MP | Won W | Drawn D | Lost L | For GF | Against GA | Diff GD | Points Pts |
1 | 26 | 18 | 7 | 1 | 62 | 26 | 36 | 61 | |
2 | 25 | 15 | 8 | 2 | 51 | 22 | 29 | 53 | |
3 | 25 | 14 | 5 | 6 | 41 | 29 | 12 | 47 | |
4 | 25 | 13 | 5 | 7 | 52 | 35 | 17 | 44 |
Within a few weeks, this points gap could be closed, and Arsenal still have to play Liverpool before the end of the season.
Gary Neville maintained that Arsenal could win the league throughout this season, and that could well be a possibility now.
Speaking on It’s All Kicking Off, Chris Sutton has been discussing the title race as Arsenal try to close in on Liverpool.
According to the pundit, he’d still rather be in Liverpool’s position at this point, despite the growing pressure on Arne Slot’s side as Arsenal breathe down their necks.

Chris Sutton would rather be in Liverpool’s position
Sutton spoke about the title race.
The pundit says that it’s great to be a chaser in this sort of race, but he’d much rather be in Liverpool’s position with points on the board.
Liverpool are favourites for the title, and Sutton thinks that they’re in a stronger position than Arsenal.
“I’d much rather have points on the board, points in the bag. I mean, that’s just common sense, isn’t it?” Sutton said.
“I mean, it would be, I suppose, a better feeling if you can sneak up from behind and suddenly hit the front, but there are no guarantees. I would still much rather be Liverpool than Arsenal and their makeshift centre forward.”
How recent title races have panned out
Sutton says he’d rather be in Liverpool’s position at the moment, but recent title races have shown that there can be serious twists and turns from this point.
Indeed, being top of the league after 25 games is a good position to be in, but it’s far from a guarantee that you will become a champion.
Season | Top of the league after 25 games | Champions |
---|---|---|
2023/24 | Liverpool | Manchester City |
2022/23 | Arsenal | Manchester City |
2021/22 | Manchester City | Manchester City |
2020/21 | Manchester City | Manchester City |
2019/20 | Liverpool | Liverpool |
2018/19 | Liverpool | Manchester City |
2017/18 | Manchester City | Manchester City |
2016/17 | Chelsea | Chelsea |
2015/16 | Leicester City | Leicester City |
2014/15 | Chelsea | Chelsea |
2013/14 | Chelsea | Manchester City |
It’s not a rarity to see the top of the table standings flipped late in the day, Arsenal and Liverpool themselves know that only too well.
The reality is that anything can happen from here, and that game between Arsenal and Liverpool at Anfield in a few weeks’ time will ultimately have a huge bearing on who lifts the trophy at the end of the season.
It’s still all to play for heading into the final 13 weeks of the season, but, as Sutton says, Liverpool are in a stronger position than Arsenal right now
