Chris Sutton says 27-year-old Tottenham player can actually be a nightmare to play against
Chris Sutton has issued his verdict on the news that Timo Werner has joined Tottenham Hotspur on loan for the rest of the season as the German prepares to potentially make his debut this weekend.
Timo Werner became Spurs’ first signing of the January transfer window. The 27-year-old has signed on loan with an option to buy.
It appears to be a low-risk move for Tottenham. Should Werner fail to make an impact, Spurs are under no obligation to keep him.
Chris Sutton praises Tottenham signing Timo Werner
But Arsenal-supporting pundit Darren Bent has admitted that he feels uneasy about Werner moving to Tottenham. Meanwhile, Paul Merson believes that signing Werner could prove to be a masterstroke.

The former Chelsea man could make his debut for Ange Postecoglou’s side when they face Manchester United this weekend. And speaking on , Chris Sutton believes that the forward could make a really positive impact while Heung-min Son is away on international duty.
“Scoring has not been a problem for Tottenham so far – they have scored 20 more than United – but I do worry about how they will cope without Son Heung-min, who is away at the Asian Cup,” he said.
“Former Chelsea forward Timo Werner has signed on loan this week and we know he has electric pace and can be a nightmare to play against, but he is not usually clinical enough in front of goal. It will be interesting to see how he gets on.”
Much less pressure on the German this time around
There is arguably a big difference between the pressure which was on Werner when he signed for Chelsea and now he is at Tottenham.
He became one of the Blues’ marquee additions ahead of the 2020/21 season. And actually, his record is probably a bit better than many give him credit for.
Now however, he is coming in on loan. Tottenham fans are aware that the move may not necessarily work out. And Werner will be under no illusions that he has some doubters to silence.
That may perhaps help bring the best out of him over the coming months. In fact, it is really hard to see how anyone can really be that critical of this particular piece of business.
