It appears that Celtic could lose midfielder Stuart Armstrong this summer. The 26-year-old has entered the final year of his contract at the club.
With that in mind, Celtic will not want to risk losing him on a free and are set to sell him instead this summer.
Southampton, Crystal Palace, Brighton and West Brom have been linked with the player,
For one former Celtic player, it is a simple decision. Chris Sutton, who spent six years at Parkhead, is predictably unequivocal in his feelings about the midfield maestro.
He sent out this Tweet yesterday:
I like Stuart Armstrong as a player but he didn’t want to commit to Celtic long term last season…. if he’s not committed the best thing Celtic can do is sell him and move on asap…
— Chris Sutton (@chris_sutton73)
Whilst not many people enjoy agreeing with Sutton, on this occasion, he is 100 percent right.
Armstrong has been a great servant for Celtic since arriving from Dundee United in 2015. The Scotland international has been a brilliant player but the club can easily replace him.
Callum McGregor has already shown that he is capable of taking his place in the Celtic first-team and the club already have plenty of options in his position.
With £6 million in the kitty, Celtic could easily bring in recruits capable of taking his role in the first-team.
The sale of Armstrong simply makes sense for Celtic, who need fully-committed players to be a success domestically and in Europe.
Time to let Armstrong go.
