Chris Sutton raves about Rangers star after another win over Lech Poznan

Chris Sutton has applauded Rangers defender Connor Goldson for another commanding performance as Steven Gerrard’s side beat Lech Poznan in Poland 2-0 – despite a number of changes to his side, coverage of the match.

Rangers had already qualified for the knockout rounds of the competition but could still finish at the top of their group by matching Benfica’s result. They went one better, winning 2-0 while Benfica only managed a 2-2 draw with Standard Liege.

Goldson, 27, has been absolutely integral to Rangers this season. Even against Poznan with Gerrard making changes, the former Brighton defender was one of the first names on the team sheet again. He has played every single match for Rangers this term.

He has started and finished his 26 matches, helping Rangers keep their 20th clean sheet of the season – while also netted five goals, and he was inches away from a sixth before Ianis Hagi tapped in. Sutton raved about the centre-back.

“He’s been outstanding all season has Connor Goldson,” Sutton said. “He has been a rock at the back. So unlucky not to score, it is a brilliant header and Hagi – will even you would have scored that one Darrell [Currie, BT Sport presenter].”

TBR’s view – Goldson will surely have Premier League suitors

Signed for a bargain £3million, £20k-a-week () Goldson has been impeccable. Solid in the air, able to pass the ball, brave – he is everything you want from a modern centre-back. A leader without the armband.

He has arguably been Rangers’ best player this season – without netting the headlines, something which James Tavernier has. If Premier League clubs are looking for a central defender, they could do worse than looking at the on-fire Goldson.
