Celtic’s start to the new season has been a mixed bag. The Bhoys have won every domestic match so far, and got their Premiership campaign off to a great start with a 7-0 mauling of St. Johnstone. However, Neil Lennon’s side came up short over two legs against CFR Cluj, and were subsequently dumped out of the Champions League before even reaching the group stages.
Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has been keeping a keen eye on the goings on at Celtic Park. The retired forward said in the that Lennon’s set up “still looks a bit of a jigsaw to me”.
Sutton is also concerned about the squad roles that have been handed to some senior players. Whilst winger Mikey Johnston has impressed, others in that part of the pitch look to have been frozen out. As Sutton said, “behind him in the pecking order puzzles me. Lewis Morgan looks the back-up but what has happened with the £2million of Marian Shved? And Scott Sinclair seems to be out in the cold”.
TBR’s view
Sutton is right to question what Lennon has in mind for the likes of Sinclair and Shved. The latter has scarcely had a chance to prove himself since his arrival in Scotland. Sinclair, meanwhile, has previously been a vital player for the Hoops. For the majority of Brendan Rodgers’ tenure, the Englishman was a regular starter. Now, though, he doesn’t appear to be in the reckoning for a first choice role.
Whilst Sinclair’s form has undeniably dipped, he remains a talented player. If Celtic aren’t going to move him on, then Lennon could surely be doing more to reintegrate the former Manchester City man.
