Chris Sutton questions Celtic interest in midfielder David Turnbull

Chris Sutton has voiced his concern about Celitc’s reported interest in Motherwell midfielder David Turnbull and suggested they should not sign him unless they offload someone first.

The have reported that the Bhoys have stepped up their pursuit of the 19-year-old sensation and made contact with Motherwell by opening direct talks.

It is understood that he is valued at around £3million, with Premier League trio Southampton, Burnley and Brighton also keen.

Turnbull is a central midfielder that has just enjoyed an excellent individual campaign, where he played 34 senior games.

He scored a remarkable 16 goals and supplied seven assists to highlight his quality, which also helped him earn the Scottish Football Writers’ Young Player of the Year award.

Pundit Sutton is a bid admirer of the Motherwell dazzler, but is struggling to see how he would make an impact at Parkhead and urged his former side Celtic to be cautious.

“I like Motherwell midfielder David Turnbull. He has had a tremendous breakthrough season at the Lanarkshire club,”

“Now here comes the but clause… The biggest issue for me surrounding Turnbull is would he get a game for Celtic? Will Turnbull take Celtic to the next level? Unless players make way then there is no room to accommodate Turnbull at Celtic.”

TBR’s View:

Celtic certainly need reinforcements during the summer to help Neil Lennon’s side launch another title bid, as surely Old Firm rivals Rangers won’t stand still in the transfer window.

Turnbull is one of the best young talents emerging in the Scottish Premiership right now and snapping him up for £3million could be a great investment.

He may not walk into the starting XI for the Scottish champions immediately, but the hectic fixture list dictates he would get opportunities and he’s got the ability to seize that.
